About the role
Senior Software Engineer — Data Layer Automations (Rust, Node & GraphQL) Team: Marcom Engineering · Data Platform Level: Senior Location: PST Time Zone (Bay Area) — Sunnyvale, CA (3 days a week) About the role: We run a federated GraphQL data layer that composes many back-end services into a single, typed API powering large-scale, consumer-facing web experiences. At its center is a Rust-based federation router; around it sit dozens of subgraphs, many written in Node/TypeScript, owned by teams across the org. We're looking for a senior engineer who writes production code and builds the automation that carries it safely to production. You'll own the pipelines for the router and its plugins end to end — build, test, benchmark, schema checks, and progressive rollout — and you'll contribute directly to the Rust and Node code those pipelines ship. If you believe the path to production is itself a piece of software worth engineering well, this role is for you. What you'll do: - Engineer the router's path to production. Design, build, and own the CI/CD pipelines for our GraphQL router on Rio (our internal CI/CD platform) — from Rust compilation, cross-target builds, and container images through automated testing and progressive deployment. - Make router builds fast and reproducible: Cargo workspace and dependency caching, incremental and parallel builds, artifact signing, versioning, and provenance. - Build in quality gates that matter for a latency-critical service: unit and integration suites, performance benchmarks with regression detection, fuzzing, dependency and vulnerability scanning, and config validation. - Automate canary and staged rollouts with health- and SLO-based promotion, fast rollback, and zero-downtime config and binary updates across environments. - Build the router and its extensions. Write and maintain Rust code in the router — custom plugins, coprocessors, auth, caching, telemetry, and query-governance features — alongside the core router team. - Build the Node/TypeScript tooling and services that surround it: coprocessors, CLIs, test harnesses, and internal developer tools. - Keep the graph safe to change. Own schema delivery workflows: automated composition, breaking-change and operation checks against real traffic, schema registry integration, and gated publishing for every subgraph. - Provide paved-path pipeline templates so partner teams can build, test, and ship Node subgraphs onto the graph with minimal friction and strong guardrails. - Raise the bar on developer velocity. Measure and improve build times, pipeline reliability, flaky-test rates, and lead time to production. - Partner with platform, infrastructure, and security teams on environment provisioning, secrets management, and compliance requirements. Minimum qualifications: - 6+ years of software engineering experience, including significant time building and operating production backend or platform [contact hidden]. - Hands-on experience designing and owning CI/CD pipelines for production services — on Rio (our internal CI/CD platform) or a comparable platform (GitHub Actions, Buildkite, Jenkins, GitLab CI, Tekton, Argo). - Production experience writing Rust, and a working understanding of the Rust toolchain: Cargo workspaces, features, cross-compilation, and build performance. - Strong Node.js / TypeScript skills for building services, tooling, and automation. - Solid experience with GraphQL APIs — schema design, resolvers, and how schema changes affect clients. - Experience with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes), plus deployment strategies such as canary, blue/green, and feature flags. - Comfort owning services in production: observability, SLOs, and incident response. Preferred qualifications: - Experience with GraphQL federation (Apollo Federation or equivalent), schema registries, and composition/check tooling (e.g. Rover, GraphOS, Hive). - Experience building or extending GraphQL routers, gateways, or API proxies (Apollo Router, Hive, Cosmo, Envoy, or custom). - Experience with progressive delivery tooling (Argo Rollouts, Flagger, Spinnaker) and GitOps workflows. - Experience with performance benchmarking and load testing in CI (criterion, k6, Gatling, or similar). - Familiarity with supply-chain security practices: SBOMs, artifact signing, and dependency auditing (cargo-audit, cargo-deny, npm audit). - Background in high-traffic, consumer-facing web platforms.
